New Mexico is in the south western region of the United States. Its landscape ranges from deserts to snow-capped peaks, and its many rivers include The Rio Grande, Pecos, Canadian, San Juan, and Gila.
Santa Fe is the state capital and primary tourist attraction of the state. It is home to a concentration of arts and culture, historic architecture and scenic beauty. In August, the city hosts the annual Santa Fe Indian Market. An enormous hot-air balloon fiesta is held annually in Albuquerque, the state's largest city.
A large area of New Mexico is preserved in national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and other wild areas. Hiking is popular in The Sangre de Cristo Mountains, The Jemez Mountains and Bandelier National Monument.
